Plot Summary

Ready for a trip into the mind of a true psychopath? "American Psycho" takes you there, and it ain't pretty—but damn, it's entertaining! Directed by Mary Harron and based on Bret Easton Ellis's notorious novel, this film has earned its stripes as a horror classic. Christian Bale absolutely kills it (pun intended) as Patrick Bateman, a guy who balances his job and his murderous hobbies with unsettling ease. Set in the flashy '80s, we follow Bateman's spiral into madness through a series of darkly humorous and downright disturbing episodes. This movie is perfect if you love your horror with a side of satire. Bale's performance is so chilling, you'll forget he's acting. If this film has eluded you thus far, you're in for an exceptionally twisted treat!

Chopping Block - Hits & Misses

Hits

  • Christian Bale’s turn as Patrick Bateman is both side-splittingly funny and bone-chilling. He captures Bateman’s superficial charm and underlying craziness to a tee. It almost makes you wonder - should we be concerned... or is he just an incredible actor!?

  • This movie’s dark humour is a riot. It hilariously takes a sharp jab at the 1980s, with Bateman’s pop music lectures and the ridiculous business card comparisons being both sidesplitting and super creepy. I live for dark humor, and this film always hits the mark, no matter how many times I watch it

  • Willem Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon, and Chloë Sevigny bring their A-game, giving the film extra layers as it delves into shallow relationships and social masks. A lot of horror and psychological thrillers fumble with supporting characters, but not this one – these performances feel totally genuine.

Misses

  • Now, I don’t have any major gripes, but I try to stay neutral with my reviews. The ending can be a hit or miss depending on your taste. Some folks find the ambiguity frustrating, feeling it undermines the story. Personally, I LOVE that they leave it open—it adds depth and keeps you questioning the reality of Bateman’s actions.

  • Although toned down from the novel, the movie still packs in some graphic and explicit scenes, especially against women, which have stirred up controversy. If gore and graphic violence aren’t your thing, this might not be your cup of tea.

Full Review

  • Scare Factor — Points: 1 They nail the mix of psychological horror and dark comedy (name a better combo—I’ll wait!), crafting an atmosphere so unsettling it keeps you on edge the entire time. The scares are more about getting inside Bateman’s twisted head and witnessing his shocking actions, turning the creepiness factor up to a solid 100.

  • Storyline and Plot — Points: 1 The film’s episodic structure really nails the fragmented psyche of Bateman. Some folks might find the lack of a clear story arc a bit disorienting, but personally, I think it brilliantly emphasizes the disjointed and chaotic nature of his mind.

  • Atmosphere and Setting — Points: 1 Set in the glamorous world of 1980s Wall Street, the film really uses its setting to take a jab at the era’s materialism and moral emptiness. The lavish environments and meticulous attention to detail make Bateman’s brutal acts even more shocking by contrast.

  • Special Effects and Makeup — Points: 1 The special effects and makeup are disturbingly realistic, especially in the more violent scenes. These elements really push the boundaries and make the film’s portrayal of violence incredibly shocking and controversial.

  • Acting and Performances — Points: 1 Christian Bale’s standout performance is the film’s crown jewel, making Patrick Bateman one of the most iconic figures in horror cinema. The supporting cast kills it too, adding depth and nuance to the film’s sharp critique of 1980s culture.

Final Verdict

"American Psycho" (2000) remains a standout in the horror genre. Its mix of dark comedy, social satire, and psychological horror provides a compelling and disturbing look into the mind of a psychopath and the culture that shaped him. Fans of psychological thrillers like "Fight Club," "Donnie Darko," and "Taxi Driver" will find plenty to enjoy here, as will those who love dark, satirical takes on society. While its ambiguity and violent content might not be for everyone, the film’s sharp critique of 1980s consumerism and Bale’s unforgettable performance cement its status as a horror classic. Just remember, it's not the business suits that make the man, but the axes they wield.
