Plot Summary

"Cam," directed by Daniel Goldhaber and written by Isa Mazzei, is a 2018 psychological horror film that explores the dark side of internet fame and identity theft in the world of camgirls. Starring Madeline Brewer as Alice, a camgirl whose online persona gets hijacked by a mysterious doppelgänger. The film delves into the eerie and unsettling implications of losing control over one's online identity. Alice, performing under the name Lola, is a successful camgirl trying to climb the ranks of her website. Her life takes a disturbing turn when she gets locked out of her account and discovers that a perfect replica of her is continuing her shows. This doppelgänger mimics her every move and even interacts with her regular customers, leaving Alice desperate to reclaim her identity and uncover the truth behind the eerie duplication.

I went in with little expectations, as I hadn't heard much about this film, but I was pleasantly surprised! The film addresses several contemporary issues, such as the vulnerability of digital identities, the commodification of personal lives for online audiences, and the psychological impact of living a dual life. The narrative serves as a commentary on the modern obsession with online validation and the precarious nature of internet fame. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of identity theft in a world where we post our entire lives online, and with AI is becoming more advanced every day. Just think, your doppelgänger might be planning their debut right now!

Chopping Block - Hits & Misses

Hits

  • I think Brewer’s portrayal of Alice is the film's strongest standout element. She adeptly captures the character’s initial confidence and subsequent unraveling as she grapples with her stolen identity. Brewer’s performance drives the film, making Alice’s struggle both compelling and relatable.

  • Goldhaber’s direction really keeps a tense and eerie atmosphere throughout the film. I love how the vibrant colours and stark lighting contrast the seemingly glamorous world of camming with the dark, underlying threats.

  • I love how "Cam" offers a fresh take on the doppelgänger trope, integrating it into the context of modern internet culture. The screenplay by Isa Mazzei, who drew from her own experiences as a camgirl, brings authenticity to the film’s depiction of the camming world. The film’s exploration of identity theft and the loss of control in the digital age felt timely and thought-provoking.

Misses

  • I think while the main plot is intriguing, some subplots and character arcs feel underdeveloped. For instance, the relationship between Alice and her family, particularly her mother’s disapproval and her brother’s involvement, could have been explored more deeply to add emotional weight to the narrative.

  • I found the film’s ending left several questions unanswered, which might frustrate some viewers. The mysterious nature of the doppelgänger and the mechanics of the identity theft are never fully explained, leaving a sense of ambiguity that felt intriguing but also a bit unsatisfying.

Full Review

  • Scare Factor — Points: 1 "Cam" blends psychological horror with the fear of losing one's identity in the digital age. I think the concept of a doppelgänger taking over Alice’s life is chilling, and the film does a great job at using this premise to build tension and suspense.

  • Storyline and Plot — Points: .5 The plot is compelling and relevant, touching on the dangers of internet fame and the fragility of digital identities. While the central narrative is strong, the underdeveloped subplots could have added more depth to the story. Those missing layers could have made it even more gripping!

  • Atmosphere and Setting — Points: 1 The film excels in creating a tense and visually captivating atmosphere. I love how the stark contrasts between the bright, artificial world of camming and the dark, unsettling reality that Alice faces enhance the film’s themes and mood.

  • Special Effects and Makeup — Points: 1 The special effects are used sparingly but effectively, enhancing the eerie atmosphere without overwhelming the narrative. The visual representation of the doppelgänger is particularly well-executed, adding to the film's unsettling nature. It’s super eerie and hits just right!

  • Acting and Performances — Points: 1 Madeline Brewer delivers a standout performance, bringing depth and nuance to Alice’s character. The supporting cast also performs well, but Brewer's portrayal of Alice's fear and determination is the film’s highlight. She absolutely nails it!

Final Verdict

"Cam" stands out as a gripping psychological thriller that deftly combines elements of horror with a sharp commentary on internet culture. I think Madeline Brewer’s strong performance, coupled with Goldhaber’s effective direction, makes it a compelling watch. While it may leave some narrative threads hanging, the film's exploration of identity, technology, and the dark side of online fame really felt like it hit the nail on the head.

For those interested in a modern, tech-infused horror story, "Cam" provides a thought-provoking and visually engaging experience that delves into the complexities and dangers of living life online. "Cam" is the twisted wake-up call you didn't know you needed, reminding us that what you see isn’t always what you get.
